Nutraceuticals
Algae is a proven, viable source of food-grade nutraceuticals for both human and animal consumption. Algae strains of particular interest to the pharmaceutical industry – and which Ternion Bio can grow and harvest using our Photo BioReactors – include:
- Organic Astaxanthin, which exhibits strong free-radical scavenging activity and is used to protect against lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage of LDL cholesterol, cell membranes, cells and tissues. A powerful antioxidant, Astaxanthin can be used to develop nutraceutical supplements effective for today’s aging population.
- Astaxanthin fish feed, which uses the red pigmentation of Astaxanthin to make up for the lack of a natural dietary source of the pigment in commercial fish and crustacean farms. In addition to pigmentation, Astaxanthin has also been found to be essential for their proper growth and survival.
- Spirulina, a fresh-water alga – actually, a form of bacteria – whose muscle-building potential exceeds that of both red meat (27 percent more effective) and soy (34 percent more effective). In addition to protein, Spirulina contributes a powerful combination of minerals including iron, calcium and magnesium, as well as vitamins A, B, C, D and E.
- Chlorella, a simple single-cell, fresh-water algae, can help detoxify the human body, improve digestive function (including decreasing constipation), improve mental clarity and duration of focus, promote a healthy pH balance and help freshen breath.
